Abel Kirui confirms his world crown in marathon

Kenya says goodbye to Daegu with five of the six medals at stake in long distance after the triplet in feminine category

The Kenyan athlete Abel Kirui conquered last Sunday the race of marathon of the World Championship of Daegu, repeating this way the victory achieved two years ago in Berlin. Kirui (2h07.38) turns into the third athlete of the history in confirming the world crown in marathon. After having worked as pacemaker for big champions (he was the pacemaker of Haile Gebrselassie - who received the award Prince of Asturias of the Sport 2011 - in his world record), he is now the main favorite to achieve the golden medal in London 2012, replacing his compatriot Samuel Wanjiru . The podium of Daegu was completed by the also Kenyan Vincent Kipruto and the Ethiopian Feyisa Lilesa. This way, Kenya says goodbye to Daegu with five of the six medals at stake in the race of marathon, after the triplet in feminine category.

Chema Martínez, eight in Berlin, was the best Spanish with the 25th position (2h17:44), crossing the finish line with Rafael Iglesias, hand-in-hand, who ended 26th. Another Spanish in competition, Pablo Villalobos, finished 30th with a time of 2h18:12. "We have finished among the 30 first ones. We are not that bad, I think we have made a worthy role" valued Iglesias.
