• An absolute record: 23,000 runners will take starter’s orders this Sunday in the eDreams Mitja Marató de Barcelona

• The Ethiopian athlete Roza Dereje will try and beat the women’s world record and the Ugandan Stephen Kissa will go for the record time for the event

• The race achieves amazing figures, with 7,500 women and more than 10,000 runners from abroad.

Barcelona, 13/02/2020- Today at midday the 30th edition of the eDreams Mitja Marató de Barcelona was presented in the Museu Olímpic i de l’Esport in the presence of the Councillor for Sport of Barcelona City Council, David Escudé, the President of RPM-MKTG, Juan Porcar and the Director of the eDreams Mitja Marató de Barcelona, Cristian Llorens, as well as the two athletes who are favourite to win the race, the Ethiopian Roza Dereje and the Ugandan Stephen Kissa.

David Escudé expressed a wish: “This is one of the best half-marathons in the world, and I have had a dream: that all the physical and weather conditions should be right, and men’s and women’s world records should be beaten in the race”. For his part, Cristian Llorens said that he was pleased but also ambitious: “The Mitja’s growth seams unstoppable and it aims at more records. There are a lot of runners and spectators, which involves a great responsibility”.

Roza Dereje, the winner of the last edition, aims to beat the world half-marathon record. “I want to run as fast as possible. I have my own dreams and a clear target for a time, but I have to see how I am on race day. If things go well, I hope to be able to enjoy something very special”. Stephen Kissa said that “I want to achieve my personal best, and I know I can run the race here in 59 minutes” (the record to beat is 59:44). Dereje and Kissa are the favourites among the 200 elite athletes entered for the race.

Among the Spanish runners we would highlight Dani Mateo, with his place in the Olympic Games already in his pocket. He is after the qualifying standard for the World Half Marathon Championship, so he will try and complete the course in under 63 minutes (last year he made his debut over the distance in Barcelona with 01:03:52). For her part, Diana Martín, a mother with a successful track record in the 3,000 metres hurdles, wants to get below 01:13 to take on her assault on the marathon with confidence. Overall, 200 elite athletes will line up at the start this Sunday at 08:45 in Passeig Pujades.

Record numbers
The eDreams Mitja Marató de Barcelona posts record numbers this year. The event, which had to put up the ‘Sold Out’ sign two weeks ago, has reached a record figure of 23,000 runners. Other records beaten are: 7,500 women (32.6% of the total) and foreign runners, with more than 10,000 athletes for the first time (3,000 more than last year), representing 45% of the total. The number of countries has also risen, to 122, clearly beating the 103 represented in the last edition. The Barcelona half-marathon has renewed its Gold Label status from World Athletics (the former IAAF) for the best road races in the world, confirming its growth in successive editions.

This evening, the Feria del Corredor (Runners Fair) will open its doors at 17:00 so that competitors can collect their race numbers/bibs in the Palau de Congressos de Barcelona (Avinguda Reina Maria Cristina s/n) until 21:00. Tomorrow Friday 14th the opening hours will be from 10:00 to 21:00 and on Saturday 15th from 09:00 to 20:00.
