ONE HALF MARATHON EVERY MONTH: CHALLENGE NUMBER 31 FOR SUSANNE OHLSÉN WILL BE IN BARCELONA

11/12/2019

At the age of 50, Susanne Ohlsén will be coming to Barcelona to complete her 31st half-marathon. One day, the Swede decided to take on the challenge of running one half-marathon every month since August 2017. “I like to push myself”, she says, and her philosophy will bring her to our city for the first time.

Her initial idea was to do a half-marathon every month for a year, but she then realised that there were a lot of cities she had not visited and decided to extend her plan a little more. A little more? She has spent three years travelling to different cities, giving it her all along the streets of Paris, Prague, St Petersburg, Lisbon, Bilbao, Bucharest and Dublin, among others! Her daughter has also accompanied her on her adventure.

The best way of being a tourist
Susanne thinks that “the best way to see a new city is by participating in a race”. Barcelona will be yet another adventure for the Swede, who will arrive in Catalonia and fulfil a dream at the same time.

What started out as hobby for Susanne has since become an obsession. Running helped her feel good and cleared her head, running every day to compensate her life in a demanding environment. Since that first day, she has had no intention of slowing down until she completes the target that she has set herself: July 2020.

This will be Susanne’s 31st marathon, and she aims to enjoy Barcelona and the 21-kilometre route through the city. She will be running for herself, nobody else. She does not like to compare her results against those of other runners, she believes that you have to enjoy running… “if you focus too much on what the others are doing -or their results- it is easy to lose your motivation”. In this sport, patience is essential if you are to make progress; results do not just come along, nor do they exist in a vacuum.

“A lot of people say I’m a bit crazy”, Susanne says with a smile as she talks about people’s reactions before she started the challenge. No doubt many thought she would not achieve her aim, but she is very clear in her mind about it. So, another story of someone pushing themselves higher and onwards: Susanne’s 50 years of age are no excuse when it is about fulfilling dreams.
